rheumatism /rheu·ma·tism/ (roo´mah-tizm) any of a variety of disorders marked by inflammation, degeneration, or metabolic derangement of the connective tissue structures, especially the joints and related structures, and attended by pain, stiffness, or limitation of motion.rheumat´ic muscular rheumatism fibrositis. palindromic rheumatism repeated attacks of arthritis and periarthritis without fever and without causing irreversible joint changes.
rheumatism (rōōˑ·m n an inflammatory condition of the joints, bursae, muscles, or ligaments; distinguished by a hindering of movement, pain, and a deterioration in at least one part of the musculoskeletal system. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, or systemic lupus erythematosus. rheumatism (roo´m n (rheumatic disease), a nonspecific term indicating any painful disorder related to joints, muscles, bone, or nerves; acute rheumatic fever; or, as used by lay persons, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, myositis, or degenerative joint disease. rheumatism An older term for a constellation of nonspecific complaints–eg, pain, stiffness, and limitation of movement vaguely attributable to derangements of joints and supporting connective tissue.
