restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), a difference in the DNA sequences of homologous chromosomes as revealed by different lengths of the restriction fragments produced by enzymatic digestion of a selected region of chromosomes. RFLPs are believed to be inherited according to mendelian laws and have been used to locate the genes associated with several inherited disorders, including Huntington's disease.
