the electric potential across a nerve cell membrane before it is stimulated to release the charge. The resting potential for a neuron is between 50 and 100 mV, with the excess of negatively charged ions inside the cell membrane.
resting potentialthe electrical potential present between the inside and outside of a nerve or muscle fibre when in a resting state. The inside is negatively charged (-60 millivolts) and the outside positively charged. The membrane is polarized and the axon has a ‘resting potential’. Compare ACTION POTENTIAL.
