amoxicillin /amox·i·cil·lin/ (ah-mok?si-sil´in) a semisynthetic derivative of ampicillin effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
amoxicillin, amoxycillin an aminopenicillin, similar in action to ampicillin and susceptible to ß-lactamase, but more efficiently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and with a longer duration of action. amoxicillin-clavulanic acid addition of clavulanic acid widens the spectrum of activity and renders amoxicillin resistant to ß-lactamase. A widely used antibiotic in dogs and cats. |
