resident [rez′idənt] Etymology: L, residere, to remain 1 a physician in one of the postgraduate years of clinical training after the first, or internship, year. The length of residency varies according to the specialty. See also PGY. 2 a person who receives inpatient care in a long-term care facility. resident, n a graduate and licensed dental professional or physician who has completed an internship and is serving in the hospital while pursuing advanced didactic and clinical studies in special disciplines of knowledge.
