refining

The processing of a food (e.g., sugar cane) to extract a component of interest (sugar).

Health and natural food advocates are critical of this process, and believe beet sugar, molasses and honey to be far superior to refined or “white” sugar—although the nutritive value of these unprocessed products in terms of minerals and vitamins is minimal.
