read-only memory (ROM),
the part of a computer's memory in which information is permanently stored on specialized processors. The operator may have access to the memory, but only for purposes of reading the contents. ROM also executes automatically when the computer is started. Special equipment or programming is required to write, erase, or alter the contents of read-only memory. Compare random access memory.
