reaction-formation /re·ac·tion-for·ma·tion/ (-for-ma´shun) an unconscious defense mechanism in which a person assumes an attitude that is the reverse of the wish or impulse actually harbored.

Freud (1985), in his early letters to Wilhelm Fliess, wrote about shame as a defense, and this became one of the main psychoanalytic perspectives on shame; it was seen as a reaction-formation to the unacceptable wish to exhibit one's genitals, or the wish to express other perverse fantasies.
