the precipitation of moisture, as rain, with high acidity caused by release into the atmosphere of pollutants from industry, motor vehicle exhaust, and other sources. Acid precipitation with a pH of 5.6 or lower is blamed by various authorities for numerous human health problems, fish kills, and the destruction of timber. Also called acid precipitation, acid snow.
