radiopacity

Etymology: L, radiare, to emit rays, opacus, obscure
the ability to stop or reduce the passage of x-rays. Bones have relative radiopacity and therefore display as white areas on an exposed x-ray film. Lead has marked radiopacity and therefore is widely used to shield x-ray equipment and atomic power sources. Also called radiodensity. radiopaque, adj.

radiopacity [ra″de-o-pas´ĭ-te]
the quality or property of being radiopaque.

radiopacity (rāˈ·dē·ō·pasˑ·i·tē),
n the capability of a substance to hinder or completely stop the passage of x-rays, such as lead and bones, thus producing a light image on film. Also called
radiodensity.

radiopacity (rā´dēōpas´itē),
n relative term referring to the considerable attenuation of a radiographic beam produced by materials of relatively high atomic number. The image on a radiograph of such materials is relatively light because less radiation passes through, which prevents the exposure of the film in that area.
