A gene on chromosome 1p22.2 that encodes a cytosolic enzyme which transaminates kynurenine to form kynurenic acid, a tryptophan
metabolite. It also has transaminase activity towards L-tryptophan, phenylalanine, serine, cysteine, methionine, histidine, glutamine and asparagine.
