RANBP9

RANBP9

A gene on chromosome 6p23 that encodes a protein that binds RAN, a small GTP-binding protein of the RAS superfamily. This protein is essential for RNA and protein translocation through the nuclear pore complex;  RANBP9 also interacts with other proteins, including met proto-oncogene, homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2, androgen receptor and cyclin-dependent kinase 11. The RANBP9 protein activates androgen and glucocorticoid receptors in the presence of their cognate ligands.

The role of the multi-domain protein, RANBP9, suggests a possible new therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease," said Dr David E.
The researchers identified the RANBP9 protein by studying low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP), a protein that rapidly shuttles AE- out of the brain and across the blood-brain barrier to the body, where it breaks down into harmless waste products.
When the scientists knocked out RANBP9 in the cell, 60pct less AE- was produced.
