Purkinje shift
n.
The change in the eye's region of maximal visual acuity as a function of availability of light; in the light-adapted eye the region is in the yellow range whereas in the dark-adapted eye the region is in the green range of the color spectrum.

Purkinje shift
Reduction in the luminosity of a red light relative to that of a blue light when the luminances are reduced from photopic to scotopic levels of illumination. This is due to the shift of the spectral sensitivity curve from a maximum at 555 nm to 507 nm when passing from light to dark adaptation. Syn. Purkinje's phenomenon. See photochromatic interval; duplicity theory.
