purified protein derivative (PPD)
[pyo̅o̅′rifīd]
a dried form of tuberculin used in testing for past or present infection with tubercle bacilli. This product is usually introduced into the skin during such tests and may produce a tuberculin reaction (wheal) within 48 to 72 hours. See also tuberculin test, tuberculosis.

Data obtained were patient age and sex, Mycobacterium species, ethnic background (Jewish/Arab), medical history, duration of node enlargement until referral, site affected, number of infected sites, size of nodes at initial visit (measured by the clinician), discoloration of the skin overlying the lymph nodes, and maximal induration in response to purified protein derivative (PPD).
Mantoux testing was performed with tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) RT 23 SSI (Statens Serum Institut; Copenhagen).
