nephroptosis /neph·rop·to·sis/ (nef″rop-to´sis) floating or hypermobile kidney; downward displacement of a kidney.
nephroptosis [nef′rəptō′sis] Etymology: Gk, nephros + ptosis, falling a downward displacement or dropping of a kidney. nephroptosis [nef″rop-to´sis] downward displacement of a kidney, usually found in young adult women, especially those who are thin and long-waisted; it can occur when kidney supports are weakened by a sudden strain or blow, or are congenitally defective. Although it may not produce serious symptoms, if there is kinking of the ureters, this could cause an obstruction to their urinary flow, and some patients also have increased susceptibility to infection. Treatment is usually by nephropexy (surgical fixation). Called also floating, hypermobile, or wandering kidney.
