Prosthenorchis a genus of parasites in the phylum Acanthocephala. Prosthenorchis elegans, Prosthenorchis spirula (syn. Prosthenorchis sigmoides) found in the terminal small intestine, colon and cecum of monkeys. Heavy infestations cause diarrhea, dehydration and death. There are yellow nodules on the serosal surface of the intestine which is swollen. There may be obstruction of the ileocecal valve and perforation of the intestinal wall.
