Professor Dick van Velzen

Professor Dick van Velzen

A Dutch pathologist with expertise in sudden infant (or cot) death syndrome (SIDS), who worked at Liverpool Children’s (Alder Hey) Hospital from 1988 to 1995, whose became notorious for having removed hearts and other organs from hundreds of dead babies without the parents’ consent.

Van Velzen falsified records, but insisted that he’d done nothing wrong; he claimed that the 850 organs found in jars in his lab were to be used for research, but that funds ran out. His actions led to the Human Tissue Act 2004, and the creation of the Human Tissue Authority.
