one of a pair of thin, broad fibrous sheets that form part of the atlantooccipital joint between the atlas and the occipital bone and contain an opening for the vertebral artery and the suboccipital nerve. Also called posterior atlantooccipital ligament. Compare anterior atlantooccipital membrane.
