Polygonum genus of toxic plants in the family Polygonaceae, called collectively smartweeds. Some cause nitrate-nitrite poisoning, some cause photosensitization; includes P. aviculare (wireweed), P. convolvulus (Fallopia convolvulus), P. esculentum, P. fagopyrum (Fagopyrum sagittatum), P. hydropiper (water pepper), P. lapathifolium (Persicaria lapathifolium), P. orientale (Persicaria orientalis), P. pennsylvanicum (willow weed), P. persicaria (spotted persicaria).
