Poiseuille's law

Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Poi·seuille's law (pwä-zyz)
n.
The principle that the volume of a homogeneous fluid passing per unit time through a capillary tube is directly proportional to the pressure difference between its ends and to the fourth power of its internal radius, and inversely proportional to its length and to the viscosity of the fluid.

Poiseuille's law [pwah-zwēz´]
at a constant driving pressure the flow rate of liquid through a capillary tube is directly proportional to the fourth power of the radius of the tube and inversely proportional to the length and viscosity of the tube.

Poiseuille's law, Poiseuille's equation
the law which expresses the relationship between the rate of flow of a liquid in a tube and the pressure gradient in the tube, the radius of the tube, the length of the tube and the viscosity of the liquid.

Validity of Poiseuille's law for the plants has been thoroughly verified and the hydraulic resistivity of real conducting pathways was found to be bigger than the theoretical values, namely Z = aZP, where a = 2.
Commonly, the models are derived by combining Poiseuille's law, which gives the average flow in a cylindrical tube, with Darcy's law for flow in porous media.
