pioglitazone /pi·o·glit·a·zone/ (pi″o-glit´ah-zōn) an antidiabetic agent that decreases insulin resistance in the peripheral tissues and liver; used as the hydrochloride salt in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. pioglitazone, an oral antidiabetic. indication It is used to treat stable type 2 diabetes mellitus. contraindications Lactation, diabetic ketoacidosis, and known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibit its use.
