phytosterols (fī·tˑ·ste·rlz),
n.pl plant-derived compounds that are structurally similar to cholesterol. These compounds may lower blood cholesterol levels, particularly LDL cholesterol, and may have uses as immunostimulants and in treating benign prostate enlargement.
