When the Physeter macrocephalus eats its favorite meal--squid--the squid's hard beak could get caught in the lining of the whale's stomach or intestines.
Studies on the striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba (Miyazaki, 1977), the common dolphin, Delphinus delphis (Collet and Saint Girons, 1984), the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus (Mitchell and Kozicki, 1984), and the dusky dolphin, Lagenorhynchus obscurus (van Waerebeek and Read, 1994), among others, demonstrate the same pattern of testis symmetry.
The most commonly sighted species (number of groups) were bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus (38); sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus (29); Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis (28); and Risso's dolphins, Grampus griseus (22).
