fosfomycin /fos·fo·my·cin/ (fos-fo-mi´sin) an antibacterial agent active against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, used in the treatment of urinary tract infection; administered orally as the tromethamine salt.
fosfomycin,
a urinary antiinfective.
indications It is used to treat infections of the urinary tract caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli.
contraindications Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
adverse effects Adverse effects include vaginitis, dysuria, hematuria, menstrual disorder, fever, insomnia, somnolence, migraine, asthenia, nervousness, constipation, dry mouth, flatulence, increased SGPT, dyspepsia, and pruritus. Common side effects are headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, and rash.
