Persicaria
plant genus in the Polygonaceae family; contains an unidentified hepatotoxin which causes hepatitis and photosensitive dermatitis; includes P. hydropiper (willow weed), P. lapathifolia, P. maculosa (P. vulgaris), P. orientalis. Called also smart weeds.

I watched dozens of worker bumble bees feeding from the flowers of Aquilegias, hardy Geraniums, Persicarias, Syringas, Cotoneasters and Foxgloves.
The persicarias have been in this position for a decade now, and three years ago I curbed their enthusiasm by reducing the outer rhizomes, to decrease their spread.
Unlike most other Persicarias it prefers to be in semi-shade to avoid leaf scorch in hot sunshine.
