permanganate /per·man·ga·nate/ (per-mang´gah-nāt) a salt containing the MnO4− ion.
permanganate salts of permanganic acid; the potassium salt is an oldfashioned, out-of-favor, weak disinfectant compound which used to be used topically. Its purple color in solution was an advantage.
