paraaminosalicylic acid (PAS, PASA)
[per′ə·amē′nōsal′ isil′ik]
a bacteriostatic agent. Also called aminosalicylic acid.
indications It is prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis and has unlabeled indications for Crohn's disease.
contraindications Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It may interact with other drugs such as digoxin.
adverse effects Among the most serious effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Fever, skin eruptions and other kinds of hypersensitivity reactions, goiter, hypokalemia, and acidosis may occur.
