paraganglion /para·gan·gli·on/ (-gang´gle-on) pl. paragan´glia   a collection of chromaffin cells derived from neural ectoderm, occurring outside the adrenal medulla, usually near the sympathetic ganglia and in relation to the aorta and its branches.

A small round body containing chromaffin cells, found near the aorta and in the kidney, liver, heart, and gonads. Also called chromaffin body.

Etymology: Gk, para + ganglion, knot
any one of the small groups of chromaffin cells associated with the ganglia of the sympathetic nerve trunk and situated outside the adrenal medulla, most often near the sympathetic ganglia along the aorta and its branches. The paraganglia are also connected with the ganglia of the celiac, renal, suprarenal, aortic, and hypogastric plexuses. The paraganglia secrete the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. Also called chromaffin body. See also chromaffin cell.
