paracrine /para·crine/ (par´ah-krin)
1. denoting a type of hormone function in which hormone synthesized in and released from endocrine cells binds to its receptor in nearby cells and affects their function.
2. denoting the secretion of a hormone by an organ other than an endocrine gland.

par·a·crine (pr-krn)
adj.
Relating to the release of locally acting substances from endocrine cells.

paracrine (parˑ··krin),
adj affecting the cells that neighbor the cells of origin, used in describing glandular and hormonal action.

paracrine
indicative of the action of the secretion of one kind of endocrine cell on another kind which is not the normal effector cell.

paracrine hormones
in contrast to true endocrines these hormones are not released into the bloodstream but into the surrounding tissues and act in the immediate vicinity, e.g. intestinal mucosal hormones.
