hydromorphone /hy·dro·mor·phone/ (-mor´fōn) a morphine alkaloid having opioid analgesic effects similar to but greater and of shorter duration than those of morphine; used as the hydrochloride salt as an analgesic, antitussive, and anesthesia adjunct.

a morphine alkaloid with effects similar to morphine but greater and of shorter duration; used as the hydrochloride salt as an analgesic, antitussive, and anesthesia adjunct, administered orally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, intravenously, or rectally.

a hydrogenated ketone of morphine with effects similar to morphine but of shorter duration; the hydrochloride is used as an analgesic and cough suppressant.

Shortly after Purdue Pharma announced in July that it was taking its 24-hour opioid Palladone off the market because of a potentially fatal interaction with alcohol, the Food and Drug Administration said it was looking into the possibility that other sustained-release narcotics could pose the same danger.
