PRIMIS+Primary Care Information Services. A free training and support service based in the Division of Primary Care at The University of Nottingham and managed by The NHS Information Centre for health and social care. PRIMIS+ is designed to help GPs and their staff to provide quality patient care by making the best use of the clinical data already collected, and to improve data quality and information management. PRIMIS+ seeks to address the problems created by poor-quality data, which can have implications for clinical care and disease surveillance. Without agreed upon standards for recording and exchanging health data, computerisation can significantly increase the risk of poor-quality data, leading to misinterpretation and adverse events. The Department of Health recognises that locally based informatics skills training and development programmes will facilitate improvement.
PRIMIS+ trains and assists information/data quality facilitators employed by primary care trusts (PCTs) or local Health Informatics Services, who then disseminate their knowledge and skills to GPs and practice staff in their local health communities. Originally known as Primary Care Information Services, its name was changed to PRIMIS+ after the 2005 award of a contract by NHS Connecting for Health, at which time the breadth of its service expanded.
