A narcotic alkaloid related to codeine, used as an analgesic and sedative chiefly in the form of its hydrochloride salt.

oxycodone (ok´sēkō´dōn),
n brand name: Roxicodone; OxyIR; OxyContin;
drug class: synthetic opioid analgesic (Controlled Substance Schedule II);
action: attaches to opiate receptors in the central nervous system;
uses: moderate to severe pain, normally used in combination with aspirin or acetaminophen, the opioid found in Percodan, Percocet, and Tylox. It is an easily abused substance. See also Percocet and Percodan.
