Nearly a quarter of India's land mass is desert or is turning into desert, according to a study published Wednesday, with deforestation and overgrazing among the main factors spurring the process.
The report said the settlement policy was aimed at protecting the ecology of the area from overgrazing by the nomads' herds as fears grow for the region's ecology.
Their number was reduced to about 150 by 1970 due to habitat destruction, overgrazing by domestic livestock and poaching.
