op·po·nens

(ŏ-pō'nens),
A name given to several muscles of the fingers or toes, by the action of which these digits are opposed to the others. The opponens muscles of the hands act at the carpometacarpal joints, cupping the palm; this enables flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joints to oppose the thumb to the small finger or vice versa. Although comparable muscles in the foot are also called opponens, no true opposition occurs in the foot.
[L. op-pono (obp-), pres. p. -ens, to place against, oppose]

opponens

The hook serves as a site of attachment of several structures including the flexor digiti minimi, opponens digiti minimi, pisiohamate ligaments, and distal portion of the transverse carpal ligament.
1314 The deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve then innervates the hypothenar muscles (abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi, and opponens digiti minimi), lumbricale muscles to D4 and D5, and the ulnar intrinsics including the dorsal and palmar interassei and adductor pollicis.
The long opponens thumb spica splint is commonly used; it immobilizes the wrist and CMC, while leaving the thumb interphalangeal joint free.

The following muscles and functions were tested when possible, and an average integer was reported per patient for hand and/or foot function: hand grip, opponens pollicis (opposes thumb), abductor pollicis brevis (abducts the thumb), adductor pollicis (adducts the thumb), opponens digiti minimi (opposes the little finger), abductor digiti minimi (abducts the little finger), third palmar interossei (adducts the little finger), foot dorsiflexion and plantar flexion.
Power of dorsal and palmar interosseous, flexor digiti minimi, opponens digiti minimi were reduced.
4) The opponens pollicis is deeper and more radial and inserts along the radial aspect of the thumb metacarpal and functions more to flex the first metacarpal, aiding the APB in opposition.

At further stages of the condition, in situations when the nerve experiences severe compression, in thenar region pain and power and skill loss arise in hands and tenar region (in abductor pollisis brevis and opponens brevis muscles innervated by motor branch of median nerve) atrophy is seen.
The deep ulnar nerve is responsible for motor control of intrinsic hand function through innervation of the dorsal and palmar interossei, the lumbricals of fourth and fifth digits, the hypothenar muscles (abductor, flexor and opponens digiti minimi), adductor pollicis muscle and the deep head of flexor pollicis brevis.
Physical examination revealed proximal muscle weakness of the upper and lower limbs (muscle test 3/5), and weakness of the distal muscles of both hands, in the abductor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis, flexor pollicis and the first and second lumbricals particularly.
The huge crowd could have been forgiven for expecting an improved performance from their favourites after recent failures on home soil, but the Eagles slumped to a third straight loss at Sport Central against an opponens t that had won just once in six games.
