odontogenic myxoma

odontogenic myxoma,
a rare tumor of the jaw that may develop from the mesenchyme of the tooth germ.

odontogenic myxoma (ōdon´tōjen´ik miksō´m),
n a deep lesion in a maxillary or mandibular tooth germ's mesenchyme. It occurs equally in males and females between the ages of 10 and 30. The tumor may displace teeth and spread to other locations.

It includes ameloblastoma, odontogenic myxoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (Pindborg tumor), calcifying odontogenic cyst (Gorlin cyst), ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma, compound odontoma, and complex odontoma.
Odontogenic myxoma is usually characterized by cortical expansion of the jawbones and, in maxillary lesions, by frequent extension into the maxillary sinus.
Histologic examination identified the mass as an odontogenic myxoma.
