any abnormal condition characterized by dysfunction of the heart and blood vessels. In the United States, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. Some common kinds of cardiovascular disease are atherosclerosis, myocardiopathy, rheumatic heart disease, syphilitic endocarditis, and systemic venous hypertension.
