pyrocatechol /py·ro·cat·e·chol/ (pi″ro-kat´ĕ-kol) a compound comprising the aromatic portion in the synthesis of endogenous catecholamines; it has been used as a topical antiseptic and as a reagent.

A biologically important organic phenol, having two hydroxyl groups attached to the benzene ring; used as a topical antiseptic. Also called catechol.

pyrocatechol
a metabolite of tannic acid used as a topical antiseptic. Prepared synthetically or extracted from powdered catechu. Called also catechol.
