Aspartame
An artificial sweetener that is a dipeptide ester of aspartic acid and phenylalanine, which was discovered in 1965 and approved by the FDA in 1983; it may be safer than saccharin except in patients with phenylketonuria
Adverse reactions Rare, with large amounts—mild depression, headaches, insomnia, loss of motor control, nausea, seizures, and possibly brain cancer

A longtime player in artificial sweeteners, Chicago, IL-based NutraSweet Company has decided to enter the natural sweetener arena with a new tabletop product to be launched next year.
NUTRASWEET has launched a rainbow of improved and distinctly unique products--including one made with Domino sugar--that share the "blue," "pink" and "yellow" packaging of today's artificial sweeteners in an effort to give consumers the sweet taste they crave without any compromise.
