iontophoresis [ī·on′tōfôrē′·sis] Etymology: Gk, ion, going, pherein, to carry the introduction of ions of soluble salts into the tissues by direct current. Also called galvanoionization, ionophoresis [ī·ō′nō-] , medical ionization. iontophoresis [i-on″to-fo-re´sis] the introduction of ions of soluble salts into the body by an electric current. adj., adj iontophoret´ic.
iontophoresis (īon´tōfôrē´sis), n the application, by means of an appropriate electrode, of a galvanic current to an ionizable agent in contact with a surface to hasten the movement into the tissue of the ion of opposite charge to that of the electrode. See also ionization.
