any of a group of compounds of the general composition, C15H24O(C2H4O)n, which are assigned a number according to the value of n. Nonoxynol 4, 15, and 30 are nonionic surfactants; nonoxynol 9 is a spermicide.

FDA has issued a final rule that requires that manufacturers of over-the-counter (OTC) stand alone vaginal contraceptive and spermicidal products containing the chemical ingredient nonoxynol 9 (N9) include a warning that the chemical does not provide protection against infection from HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Latex condoms with nonoxynol nine provide the most protection.
