noise-induced hearing loss,
a gradual loss of hearing caused by exposure to loud noise over an extended period of time, such as in an individual who works in a noisy environment. The hearing loss is sensorineural in nature and greatest in the higher frequencies. Although an early hearing loss may be temporary, it becomes permanent with increased exposure to noise. Compare acoustic trauma.

In a 2007 study of New York City mass transit systems, including subways, buses, ferries, tramway and commuter railways, researchers found that subway cars and boarding platforms were home to the worst noise levels, though all transit types created noise levels at which noise-induced hearing loss is considered a possibility.
The team are currently following up this study with a large, community-based study of noise exposures from multiple sources to develop accurate predictions of noise-induced hearing loss in urban populations.
Although occupational noise-induced hearing loss is a totally preventable condition, once the damage has been done there is no way of reversing the effects.
