When nociceptors are stimulated, signals are transmitted through sensory neurons in the spinal cord and are ultimately relayed to the thalamus in the brain and perception of pain takes place.
Nociceptors are activated in these regions and the pain is therefore generally located in the region of preserved sensation close to the site of the SCI, although it may radiate to other regions.
Studies of peripheral neural mechanisms of pain indicate that nociceptors are excited by injurious stimuli such as heat, mechanical and chemical stimuli, and inflammation.
