neurofibroma /neu·ro·fi·bro·ma/ (-fi-bro´mah) a tumor of peripheral nerves due to abnormal proliferation of Schwann cells.
neu·ro·fi·bro·ma (nr-f-brm)
n.
A moderately firm, benign, nonencapsulated tumor that results from the disorderly proliferation of Schwann cells and that includes portions of nerve fibers. Also called fibroneuroma, schwannoma.

Neurofibroma
A soft tumor usually located on a nerve.

Etymology: Gk, neuron + L, fibra, fiber; Gk, oma, tumor
a fibrous tumor of nerve tissue resulting from the abnormal proliferation of Schwann cells. Multiple growths in the peripheral nervous system are often associated with abnormalities in other tissues. See also neurofibromatosis.

neurofibroma [noor″o-fi-bro´mah]
a tumor of peripheral nerves due to abnormal proliferation of Schwann cells; called also fibroneuroma.

neurofibroma (nyoo´rōfībrō´m),
n (neurogenic fibroma, perineural fibroblastoma), 1. a benign neoplasm characterized by the various cells of a peripheral nerve (axon cylinders, Schwann cells, fibroblasts).
n 2. a connective tissue tumor of the nerve fiber fasciculi. Formed by the proliferation of the perineurium and endoneurium. See also neurilemoma.

neurofibroma
a tumor of peripheral nerves due to abnormal proliferation of Schwann cells. In cattle neurofibromas appear as subcutaneous swellings. They seem to be transmitted from a cow to her calf. Called also fibroneuroma, schwannoma.
