The pain is caused by a disc pushing upon the nerve roots coming out of your spinal cord and may shoot pain from your back & gluteal area all the way down your legs.
Additional Pain symptoms over time would be a result of degeneration of Intervertebral Discs, and development of Osteophytes (Bone Spurs) that would have an effect upon nerve roots in the Lumbar area.
