A metallic radioactive element found in trace quantities in uranium ores or synthesized; its longest-lived isotope is Np 237 with a half-life of 2.1 million years. Atomic number 93.

Etymology: planet Neptune
a transuranic, metallic element. Its atomic number is 93, and its atomic mass is 237. Although neptunium is considered a synthetic element, traces of natural neptunium have been found in uranium ores.
