neonatal intensive care unit (NICU),
a hospital unit containing a variety of sophisticated mechanic devices and special equipment for the management and care of premature and seriously ill newborns. The unit is staffed by a team of nurses and neonatologists who are highly trained in the pathophysiology of the newborn. See also intensive care unit.
