National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services made up of several institutions and constituent divisions, including the Bureau of Health Manpower Education, the National Library of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute, and several research institutes and divisions. NIH is divided into two parts: one part is responsible for funding of biomedical research outside of NIH, and the other conducts research.
