National Institutes of Health

a health agency of the United States Public Health Service, composed of numerous different component institutes and centers, many of which are dedicated to medical research.

an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services made up of several institutions and constituent divisions, including the Bureau of Health Manpower Education, the National Library of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute, and several research institutes and divisions. NIH is divided into two parts: one part is responsible for funding of biomedical research outside of NIH, and the other conducts research.

A federal agency within the US Public Health Service (PHS), and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), which is comprised of 27 Institutes and Centers located on a 306 acre campus in Bethesda, Maryland, each with a specific research agenda. The NIH is responsible for carrying out and supporting biomedical and behavioural research and improving the health of Americans; its campus is home to the Clinical Center, the largest hospital in the world totally dedicated to clinical research.
