A state of exhaustion or loss of strength and/or muscle endurance following strenuous activity associated with the accumulation of lactic acid in muscles.

muscle fatigue

The reduced capacity of a muscle to perform work as a result of repeated contractions and accumulation of lactic acid in anaerobic cell respiration. The fatigue may be partial or complete.

muscle fatigue

impairment of muscle force production or of shortening speed resulting from repeated and/or prolonged activity. Causes vary greatly according to the nature and duration of the effort. In all cases they appear to consist principally in disturbances of intramuscular biochemistry, differing substantially between circumstances. However, the possibility of contributory neural factors, resulting in reduced muscle activation, should never be overlooked. Note that cytoplasmic ATP concentrations never fall to less than about half resting levels in living muscle fibres (radical ATP depletion would lead to rigor, not weakness).
