Mucopolysaccharides are basically formed in human body and they perform some vital tasks.
Also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type III, Sanfilippo results from the lack of a specific enzyme responsible for breaking down and eliminating mucopolysaccharides from the body.
In patients affected by MPS I, these mucopolysaccharides accumulate in organs and tissues of the body, particularly in the central nervous system, liver, spleen, heart and skeleton, ultimately leading to cell death and progressive tissue and organ damage.
